While we don't know who the first person to wear socks was, but we do know they have been around for a very long time. The oldest pair of socks ever found (pictured below) were discovered at an excavation site near the Nile River in Egypt. They could be as old as the year 300 AD.
Over time, socks have been made from fur or leather and tied at the ankle, and later from woven fabrics and held up by garters. At one time socks were even a symbol of nobility.
Today, socks have come a long way. You can find them in all kinds of colors, styles and fabrics. Socks can have different functions too, like athletic socks or compression socks. Most people have many pairs of socks, even an entire draw in their house dedicated just to their socks.
